As COVID-19 variants try to put a damper on the live scene, you may opt to stay home and watch classic New Year’s Eve television and participate in a few online events, or attend a small patio party with your pod.

If you should choose to ring in the new year with a more flashy backdrop, here’s The Chronicle’s guide to live Bay Area events still on schedule to welcome the arrival of 2022. Just be sure to abide by state and county health guidelines, and watch for cancellation announcements as events are subject to change amid the ongoing pandemic.

San Francisco cancels New Year’s Eve fireworks show due to omicron surge

Tune in online at 10 a.m. for Japanese New Year stories for kids. Afterward, join a discussion with the Rev. Gengo Akiba, Yoshie Akiba and Eri Takahashi broadcast live from Oakland Zen temple Kojin-an. The program will feature a blessing, chanting of the Heart Sutra and the purifying 108 rings of a Buddhist temple bell. Learn about the meditative process of cleaning, seasonal decorations and new year tea practices.

Kids of all ages are invited to see what happens when 22,000 small bouncy balls are dropped onto the street from a ladder truck 40 feet in the air. Kids will get a souvenir hard hat and can keep as many bouncy balls as their pockets and bags can hold.

Twenty-two artists including David Gans, Deborah Crooks, The Sapsuckers, Annie Hendrix, Laura Benitez, John Rybak, DB Walker Band and The Genie will perform live online to help you celebrate New Year’s Eve from the safety of home. Twenty-five percent of ticket sales/donations will benefit Bay Area Cancer Connections.

Celebrate 29 years of community togetherness with visual and performing arts for all ages. Starting with music, art and storytelling, Kids’ Night Out kicks off the event in front of historic Colton Hall with interactive arts and crafts activities and live entertainment. At 5:30 p.m. a twilight parade down Alvarado Street serves as the finale to the children’s programming. The evening festival of the arts begins at 6 p.m. and offers live music, dance, interactive art and a countdown to midnight.

The Midway’s annual New Year celebration returns for three days, featuring many live performances scheduled on four indoor and outdoor stages curated by Space Yacht, All Day All Night, G Code, Heavy Petting Zoo, Set Underground and Opulent Temple. See website for daily lineup.
