Artificial Intelligence can do a lot of things. But, did you know that now AI could be used for the analysis of urine samples collected in a contact-less manner? Yes, a healthcare startup Olive Diagnostics has launched an AI-based urine analysis device that works in sync with the IoT sensors. It’s called Olive WatchOS app. The Olive WatchOS is a self-diagnosis AI tool for urine analysis. This tool connects to an AI-based real-time urine analysis device that mounts to any toilet. The IoT device can detect biomarkers when a person urinates normally in the toilet and send alerts for the risks of conditions including dehydration and Urine Tract Infections. Clinical trials have already validated the accuracy of measuring concentrations of molecules Albumin, RBC, Nitrite, pH, specific gravity, and volume that are relevant to heart failure, kidney stones, renal failure, and other conditions.

AI, together with the Internet of Things, 5G connectivity, and data analysis has proven to be a game-changer for healthcare and diagnostics service providers. Olive WatchOS app is a primary example of this unique congruence where the Olive KG toilet-mounted device combines cutting-edge optics with IoT technology, AI, and data analysis to deliver the world’s first truly passive, non-invasive urine diagnostic system.

Israeli medical device start-up Olive Diagnostics is launching Olive WatchOS, its new Apple Watch app which brings AI-based urine analysis results to smartwatches. The app is connected to Olive’s KG, the world’s first hands-free, non-invasive, AI-based optical device for 100% passive and seamless urinalysis, which can be used from the comfort of any home or clinic. The AI will add the measurement of molecules, biomarkers in urine that are relevant to more than 600 conditions.

KG draws its analysis from molecules such as protein, ketone, creatinine, as well as red blood cells, and other urine characteristics such as volume, pressure, color, and frequency. With its integration into the Apple ecosystem, the company ensures the more pervasive and easier to consume use of the data collected, demonstrated in a user-friendly application. The app is available to registered caregivers that have been trained to deploy Olive’s KG.

As the app seamlessly connects with the device, it pulls through the diagnostics taken by the Olive KG and displays it on the Olive WatchOS app. The app then provides a health score based on the urinalysis. The Olive WatchOS is free for individual use. Additionally, as a cloud-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) application, caregivers can download the service to accurately read the measurements of urinalyses of multiple users of the KG device.

The Olive WatchOS app was developed by Supercharge, the Digital Innovation and (health) Application experts.

Using a Bluetooth feature that was first enabled in WatchOS8, the KG device automatically connects to an Apple Watch as a person approaches the toilet where it is fitted. The medical practitioner can then view directly on their terminal the volume urinated and benchmark this to the user’s previous urinalysis data or a recorded medical average. All data analysis in the cloud is subject to privacy protection based on GDPR and HIPPA standards.

“Olive Diagnostics enables quick and early detection of conditions and diseases that could negatively impact the health of a person and place an unnecessary load on healthcare professionals,” said Guy Goldman, CEO of Olive Diagnostics.

At the time of this announcement, Guy spoke to us and explained more about the technology. Guy said, “AI is the required technology needed in order to develop models that can perform molecular detection from the sea of noise that is inherently in the system. In order to understand the need for AI, it is important to understand the noise in our system. We have developed a spectrometer that sits on the side of a toilet. Spectroscopy is a very sensitive technology that is usually performed in a very controlled environment, typically users of spectrometers place a test tube into a control box, that is placed into the spectrometer which is then shut to furthermore shield the sample from external light. Our device is mounted to a home toilet with no protection from the external light.

Along with that fact is the fact that we are sampling the fluid while it is in movement, the sampling is done while the urine stream is in mid-air, which means it’s moving and doesn’t have any geometrical shape.”

Cloud and Data Ops: Mainframe-to-Cloud Migration Poised to Unlock Data

Guy added, “We are now taking this a step further and simplifying how the how users interact with the toilet mounted sensor and receive data relevant to them, as well as their caregivers.”

Goldman concluded: “Future applications for the effective use of this data by medical practitioners working in conjunction with those under their care are endless. We are looking forward to working with caregivers in this industry to see how we can take further steps to automate the collection of this new data source”.

Earlier this year, Texas Medical Technology, a leading manufacturer and distributor of medical supplies and equipment, announced a substantial investment in Olive Diagnostics, a medtech company transforming at-home urinalysis testing with a passive, continuous home monitoring system mounted on a toilet. Olive’s KG device is a hands-free, non-invasive, artificial intelligence (AI)-based device that provides remote 24/7 diagnostics by detecting urine’s molecular composition.

Olive Diagnostics was founded in 2019 by Guy Goldman (CEO) and Corey Katz. The startup’s team includes experts in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Data Analytics, Optics, and business development for the health and wellness markets. Until now, the company has raised around $4M in seed and post-seed money from Maccabi Healthcare Services, Cleveland Clinic, the Israel Innovation Authority, eHealth Ventures, Amgen Ventures, Venturing, alongside private American investors. The startup will work to raise Series A funding during the first half of 2022, in order to support its growth.
