A portion of the grain silos damaged by the deadly explosions of August 4, 2020 at the port of Beirut collapsed on Sunday in a fire. An episode that resurfaces the wounds of the families of the victims a few days before the commemoration. These reservoirs represent for some a symbol of the tragedy that caused more than 200 deaths, while others wish for its destruction and a new memorial site.

Although damaged, they still stood in the center of the port of Beirut, the remains of the deadly explosions of August 4, 2020. But since Sunday 30 July, the Lebanese capital’s grain silos, symbols of a drama that has left more than 200 dead and more than 6,500 injured, partially collapsed after a fire that lasted several weeks, leaving tanks vulnerable. . As a sad reminder, it was also a warehouse fire – which had stored hundreds of tons of ammonium nitrate without caution – that led to an explosion in 2020.

“We are not done with the disasters in Beirut yet, this collapse had to happen sooner or later,” laments Karina Sukar, the architect and survivor of the 2020 blasts.

The fire – which began in the most damaged part of the Silos in early July – was caused by a combination of remaining grain stocks in the Lebanese capital and high-temperature fermentation, the minister said in mid-July. Economy of Lebanon, Amin Salam. The latter also specified that attempts to end the fire – by land, sea or air – posed a greater risk of collapse of silos than fire.

According to officials, there are still around 3,000 tonnes of wheat and other grains in some parts of the reservoir that cannot be removed.

This is happening a few days before the 2-year anniversary of the Beirut explosion and after a fire burning there for 3 weeks in a row.

“It’s shocking and sad to see we expected it (this collapse, editor’s note) because the fires had been going on for weeks”, reacted Paul Nagier, who lost his only daughter, Alexandra, who was 3 at the time. years old, two years before the tragedy. “This fire is, as always, a symbol of the systematic bankruptcy of the Lebanese state, which never manages to act when necessary, as it was already on August 4, 2020. These silos are our fight for justice. very important symbols for

The reservoirs of the port of Beirut have, in fact, been the subject of several months of conflict between the families of the victims and the Lebanese government. Based on the green light given to this effect by Judge Tarek Bitter, in charge of investigating the explosions at the port of Beirut, the Council of Ministers first decided, on 16 March, to validate the destruction of the silos. A study by Swiss experts recommended partial destruction of the reservoir – which eventually collapsed on Sunday.

But on 18 March the situation reversed: Mohamed Murtada, the minister of culture, classified the site of the silos among historical monuments, provoking a government cacophony. He justifies this choice in a press release as “the need to preserve[them]and treat them as part of human heritage, as they are symbols of a disaster-stricken city, but to preserve this image.” The need has also been given to future generations.”

>> Explosion at the Port of Beirut: Demolition Threatened, Silos “Must Serve Memory”

Among the families of the victims, many of them are also protesting the disappearance of grain silos, as Paul Nagier recalls: “At the beginning of our fight, we sought not to touch the integrity of the site. then became a media campaign To protect these silos. And if the state ever decides to send bulldozers to bring them down, we will be there to stop it.

A position was also shared by Waldemar Fadoul, who survived the explosions in 2020. Interviewed by France 24 last March, this Franco-Lebanese architect said that he was “100% against the demolition of the building, whatever the pretext, structural or not, because the August 4 eruption in its drama and its magnitude, and our There is a unifying element of convergence in history and our identity.”

For many of the victims’ families, the grain tanks were a shield for the western part of Beirut – they absorbed part of the shock wave generated by the warehouse explosion that contained nitrates of ammonium – and a memorial symbol for Lebanon. Paul Naggier explains, “The silos have become a visual impression for everyone, like this explosion. It is a symbol of remembering and never forgetting the fight for justice, which has just begun.”

>> Explosion in Beirut: The bitterness of the families of the victims after the suspension of Judge Betar

Maintaining these silos – even if fragile – on their foundations has actually equated the traces of a tragedy to many families, while the Inquisition into the explosions has been going on for months. Judge Bitter, who faced several obstacles in his pursuit of work, was forced to suspend his investigation again last November for the third time since his appointment in February 2021. Since then, the investigation has been slowed by several political maneuvers, currently still suspended. ,

Still, the protection of the silos, despite all of them being represented, is not unanimous among the families of the victims. Karina Sukar lost her best friend – “It was like my sister” – as well as her apartment, in a shock wave in 2020 explosions. She wants these grain tanks to disappear from the Beirut landscape.

“I am one of the big losers on a human and physical level, but I am against the protection of these silos,” she explains. “I can’t see them anymore. I don’t like rubbing a knife into a wound and I prefer to heal it to move on. By destroying them we won’t destroy memory. It’s not silos that will bring back the dead.” “

Paul Naggier is also on a similar line. “We find these silos horrible and ideally, we wouldn’t want to see them at all anymore”, he confirms, before qualifying: “except that we find (some families of the victims, editor’s note) that it is more important today to keep this crime still clearly visible and well unpublished in every Beiruti’s life.”

The architect, for her part, says she is in favor of building a monument that “would better represent the victims” rather than silos.

Several projects are on the table regarding the future of the current site. According to Middle East Eye media, “once the destruction of the silos is finished”, the Lebanese executive may build a new grain storage structure, but not at the same location as it is currently. Another hypothesis would be to distribute these grain tanks at three sites – Beirut, Zahrani (in the south) and Tripoli (in the north). Finally, a memorial to the victims could see daylight, but in a location other than the current silo.

“Before there is a monument, the first thing that will happen is that the people get justice in this case (investigation of the 2020 blasts, editor’s note)”, specifies Karina Sukar, before concluding: “And if the people in power rebuild The part of the port where the current silos are, it will replace the memory which is at least symbolically well done to do justice to all Lebanese.”
